One of the top five current internet searches for women entrepreneurs is how to create a supportive network. If you’re a solopreneur or entrepreneur, then you know that building your business can be equally exhilarating and isolating. When you contemplate things like, “I don’t know what I should do about (fill in the blank),” being able to reach out to someone you trust can be invaluable.
Although building a network with other women is powerful, you don’t need to rely solely on female connections. Focusing on one gender or demographic can leave opportunities and money on the table, especially if you’re a newly- launched entrepreneur.
Now that we’ve established why we need to build our network let’s talk about how it can be done. Introverts: we hear you. We know it’s out of your comfort zone to branch out but trust us, it’s worth it.
Two things can get in the way of creating the support you need to nurture yourself and your business:
- You’re too busy building your business to notice that you’re isolated.
- The idea of finding women to network with is too daunting. In other words, fear.
Both reasons are understandable, but if we’re being honest, they’re not helpful.
There’s no shortage of ideas on how to build your network, so we’ve streamlined the MVPs for you:
Join Professional Organizations
If you’re running a content marketing business, join professional marketing or writers’ groups. If you run a travel business, join a group of other travel business owners. Here’s the thing to remember: joining a group is one thing, but actively participating is where you’ll find the pot of gold.
If there’s nothing in your area, you can start your own. Even a group of three people who have been or are currently in your shoes can provide support. Utilize the power of social media announcing that you’d like to start a specific group in your area, and then let the magic happen.
Attend Industry Events
Trade shows, seminars, and conventions are a jackpot of like-minded people doing what you’re doing. Even if your business is your side hustle, attending events or, at the minimum, attending them virtually, will give you the low-down on what’s trending in your industry.
But even more importantly, you’ll be elbow-to-elbow with other people who love to do exactly what you love to do. That could lead to collaboration and impactful relationships.
Find a Mentor, Be a Mentor
When looking for a mentor, start with your current network. It would be wonderful if mentors grew on trees, and you could pick the one you want immediately. But, searching for a mentor takes patience while identifying who to connect with. Although it may seem intimidating, don’t be shy – reach out to someone by sending a personal message sharing your interest in mentorship. If she agrees, you can offer something she may need in return.
Just as you might be looking for a mentor, remember that someone might be looking for what you have to offer. It’s a win-win for everyone.
Be Proactive
Remember: Finding your network is an active endeavor. It takes time to build meaningful relationships, and it’s always a give and take. You have a lot to offer – highlighting what you bring to the table and why a collaborative relationship could be beneficial sets the stage for strong beginnings.
Utilize Tech Platforms
Tech-enabled platforms, like EBW.ONE, are another source of finding other businesswomen. It’s an easy way to connect with like-minded people in your city or industry without searching high and low. Platforms are low-lying fruit for meeting new people while also utilizing the other perks offered.
Effective networking requires a delicate balance of strategy, authenticity, and effort. But there’s no downside to having a strong group of other people in your corner and you in theirs. There’s a direct connection between the strength of your network and the limitless possibilities for everyone.
